I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well.
– John 14:6
Jesus claimed He knew God. No big deal, right? Plenty of people make the same claim. But Jesus also said He was God. And this upset the religious leaders of His day so much that they killed Him. But that was 2,000 years ago. Why does it matter to you now? How does who Jesus is and what He’s done affect your life now in your 9 to 5, trying to take care of your kids, paying bills, or just keeping your head above water?
God, the Creator of the universe, has a purpose for you and your life. He loves you and wants to help you because He is a good God. And because of that, His plans are better than your plans. You don’t have to measure up to some impossible religious standard to know Him. You just have to take a few simple steps.
If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,‘ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
– Romans 10:9
You don’t have to be perfect. Through His death on the cross, and then coming back from the dead, Jesus took all of your wrong and gave you all of His right. If you believe that and commit to following Him, your life will never be the same. It’s as simple as repenting of your sin, declaring you want to follow Jesus, and believing He is who He says He is.
Believing in Jesus is the first step on the greatest journey of your life. You haven’t finished the race—you’ve just gotten started. The best is yet to come!
Becoming a Christian
Praying a simple prayer of faith (included below) will be the greatest decision you make in your life.
Jesus said "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6
The Bible makes it clear that we have to do something to accept the gift that God offers. This is an act of faith, believing that Jesus died for our sins and rose again. The disciple John writes, "God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
Believing involves an act of faith, based on all that we know about Jesus. It is not blind faith. It is putting our trust in a Person. In some ways it is like the step of faith taken by a bride and a groom when they say “I will” on their wedding day.
You can take that step of faith right now! It can be summarized in three very simple words:
Ask God to forgive you for all the things you have done wrong and then help you turn from them. This is called Repentance, and it means to ‘change your mind’. The fruit of repentance will change the way you act.
Believing that Jesus died for you on the cross, makes us realize the price He paid for our sin and we need thank Him for offering up His life for us and His forgiveness, freedom, and Spirit.
God never forces His way into our lives. You need to accept His gift and invite Him to come and live within you by His Spirit.
If you would like a relationship with God and you are ready to say these three things, then here is a very simple prayer you can pray that will be the start of that relationship:
Lord Jesus Christ,
I am sorry for the things I have done wrong in my life.
(Take a few minutes to ask His forgiveness for anything particular that is on your conscience.)
Please forgive me. I now turn from everything that I know is wrong.
Thank you that you died on the cross for me so that I could be forgiven and set free.
Thank you that you offer me forgiveness and gift of Your Spirit. I now receive that gift.
Please come into my life by Your Holy Spirit, and be the Lord of my life.
Thank you, Lord Jesus. Amen.
